Summary
Alpine Sphagnum Bogs and Associated Fens (Alpine Peatlands) are listed as endangered under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (1999) and as threatened under Victoria’s Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act (1988). Alpine Peatlands are highly sensitive to disturbances such as fire and slow to recover.
The objective of this project is to improve the management of 4086 hectares of Alpine Peatlands in Eastern Victoria, by reducing the impacts of fire and fire control activities by 2018.
Project outcomes will inform fuel management planning (e.g. zoning and frequency) and mitigate risk to Alpine Peatlands during bushfire response, in accordance with the Code of Practice for Bushfire Management on Public Land (2012).
