Feral horses (also known as wild horses or brumbies) have existed in the Australian Alps for over 150 years following escapes from early settlers. Horses are a foreign introduction into the delicate alpine environment, and they are considered a significant threat to the natural values of the Australian Alps based on their impacts, widespread distribution, and the challenges involved in their management.
More information about feral horses in the Australian Alps can be found in the 2009 Aerial survey of feral horses in the Australian Alps publication. More information about pest animals in the Alps can be found on our research publications page.
